AFSCME Maryland Council 67 Supports The Red Line
Baltimore, MD (August 4, 2009) – Glen Middleton gave us two buttons that states “ The Union supports the Red Line” and “AFSCME supports the Red Line “ stated Governor Martin O’Malley in his announcement today of his backing of the new Red Line system.
Today, Governor O’Malley confirmed that Maryland will be moving forward with plans to construct the new The Red Line transit system. The Red Line is 14 mile east to west light rail line operating between Woodlawn to John Hopkins Bayview. The Red Line will connect with the existing transit system: Baltimore Light Rail, MARC stations and the Baltimore Metro subway and local bus routes to create a more cohesive and pollution efficient system that allows Baltimoreans to expand their travel.
Along with the support of the new transit system AFSCME MARYLAND also announced that they are in support of the Governor’s plans. “We believe that the Red Line is an awesome opportunity for our working families as well as our children, and we support the Governor and the Mayor on this new project.” The new Red Line transit system is a locally preferred alternate and it is cost effective, rider friendly and favorably received. The 1.6 billion project will not offer residential displacement but revitalize businesses and offers reconstruction and appeal to the City of Baltimore. “The Baltimore Red Line is going to help transform our region, adding a convenient, affordable alternative to the ever increasing gridlock, with connections to Baltimore’s Light Rail, MARC and downtown bus routes, the Red Line will improve the flow of our city’s transportation, help improve air quality by taking thousands of cars off the road, and provide Maryland with a jumpstart in developing a greener state.” said Senator Ben Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Transportation Subcommittee.
Governor Martin O’Malley also announced that he will be introducing the same program to the Washington DC area called the Purple Line.
