AFSCME Maryland Council 67 Endorses Josh Cohen for Mayor of Annapolis

Submitted by AFSCME67 on Thursday, 4 June 2009No Comment

AFSCME Maryland Council 67 formally announces its support of Josh Cohen in his upcoming election for Mayor of the City of Annapolis. County Councilman Cohen has a distinguished record of public service in both elected office and in the field of criminal justice. For the past eight years he has worked in the criminal justice field as a police trainer, a Maryland Parole and Probation Agent, and in his current capacity as a Program Director for the Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center. There he manages a $6.5 Million Department of Justice grant that enhances victim services across the country.

AFSCME Maryland Council 67 represents hard-working city and county public employees across Maryland, including two locals of the City of Annapolis (Local 3162 and Local 3406). In announcing the endorsement, Executive Director Glen Middleton stated:

“AFSCME Maryland Council 67 believes in Josh Cohen’s ability to soundly manage the growing City of Annapolis and we proudly endorse his campaign for Mayor.”

Cohen was first elected to public office in 2001 to represent Ward 8 on the Annapolis City Council. He was reelected in 2005 by the largest margin of any candidate in that year’s election, and named Chairman of the City’s Finance Committee. In 2006 he won election to the Anne Arundel County Council, carrying every ward and precinct within the City of Annapolis.

During Cohen’s entire time in public office he has worked to make government responsive to the needs of working families. In response to AFSCME’s support, Cohen stated:

“One of the great strengths of our town is the hard work and dedication of our public employees. That’s why I’m so proud to have earned the support of AFSCME. In these tough economic times, it’s important that we make government as efficient as possible, while also supporting the public employees who show up every day and deliver quality services to our taxpayers. That’s exactly what I intend to do as Mayor”.
