Members Take Advantage of Council’s First Time Training and Development Classes
AFSCME Maryland Council 67 launched its inaugural Training and Development classes in June 2008, with Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) classes. The 12-week program was held at Baltimore City Community College. Students were afforded an opportunity to take advantage of the classes through a grant obtained by AFSCME. All the training materials and uniforms were provided to the students, as a result of funding provided by Mayor Sheila Dixon and Dr. Joshua Sharfstein of the Baltimore City Health Department. Students are currently employed with Johns Hopkins Bay View Hospital, University of Maryland Medical Systems, and the Baltimore City Health Department. They are Dietary Aides and Environmental Service workers.
AFSCME recognizes our members as the driving force needed for the success of healthcare facilities. It is critical employees are presented with opportunities to learn and improve their skills to advance. Betty Robinson, President of Local 2751, has worked at the UMMS as an Executive Housekeeper for 7 years. She enrolled in the program because, she says, “I wanted a career change, and I enjoy helping people.” “As President of my Local, I think it’s a wonderful thing the Union wants to help members further their careers.” “Betty is definitely leading by example,” says Executive Director, Glen Middleton, “it is never too late to improve personal development and we encourage that!”
In November 2008, students successfully completed the Certified Nursing Assistant Program. Each will have an opportunity to gain employment as Certified Nursing Assistants and Geriatric Nursing Assistants with the University of Maryland Medical Systems and Johns Hopkins Hospital – Bay View, respectfully. A graduation ceremony to honor the students, for a job well done, will be held in January 2009.
We received an overwhelming number of responses to the training program, and we are excited about expanding the program as long as funding is available. Additional training and development classes are forthcoming, and you will be notified of the classes by mail. Please make sure the main office has up-to-date personal information.
