Council 67 Supports the NAACP and Homeowners Against Predatory Lenders
AFSCME Council 67 lent its full and unwavering support to two demonstrations led by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) against unscrupulous lenders that are preying on communities across America.
The NAACP sponsored a National Day of Action on July 2nd to rally support for and bring attention to a class-action lawsuit that it has filed on behalf of minority homeowners that have been adversely affected by the discriminatory lending practices of 17 of the nation’s largest lenders.
In addition to the leadership and participation of the NAACP and Council 67, supporters and participants included elected officials, members of the clergy, representatives of organized labor, education activists, community activists, and most importantly, homeowners negatively affected by the unfair lending practices.
Mr. Glenard Middleton, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 67 and President of Local 44, brought stirring words of support and solidarity on behalf of the Council 67 family at the Baltimore rally. State Senator and Bishop C. Anthony Muse spoke at the Prince George’s County rally which also addressed the issue of a Prince George’s man who died while being held at that county’s jail for allegedly running down a county police officer.
While Council 67 wholeheartedly supports the NAACP in its efforts against discriminatory lenders it has no position on the second issue which was raised.
AFSCME Council 67 is a fervent and unequivocal supporter of working families everywhere and stands with them whenever they are confronted by unfair treatment or exploitation.
